🇬🇧 🇪🇺 The Lab UK/Europe Meetup + Tips For IRL Community Gatherings

How to: Find your Voice, Build a Tribe, and Create a Movement

In my last newsletter I began sharing the results of my recent survey and the patterns emerging in the different phases of building an education, coaching, or consulting business.

You'll see in the image below how I've developed my thinking a lot further and gone down a rabbit hole 😅

I'm so excited to share my findings with you. I've had many aha! moments in the process of collecting and organising my observations. Stay tuned for more next week :)

🇬🇧 🇪🇺 The Lab UK/Europe Meetup

Last Friday I hosted a small get together for UK and European members of a community I’m a member of: The Lab by Jay Clouse.

The impetus came from meeting Lab member Rob Dix in person at a recent online entrepreneurs dinner and remembering the reality we do not exist in a bubble of one (although it can feel like it in the day-to-day of running a business!).

Lab members are based all around the world, including Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Australia. But the majority of members are based in the US, and they often get together IRL at conferences.

So, Rob and I were like let’s do a UK & Europe meetup!

After a post in the community to gauge interest and a quick poll on dates, we got a date in the diary.

Here’s us grabbing lunch together. We were a true European crew!

Meeting IRL was better than we could all have imagined. So good our lunch became a loooong lunch - 4.5 hours! And we decided on a February date to meet up again :)

Yes, the magic of hanging out in person was awesome (especially when you spend a lot of time online).

But the magic many of us didn’t expect was the conversation that came about from two questions:

  1. What are you up to?
  2. What’s top of mind for you?

With our small group, over lunch, we took it in turns to go around the table and share.

Questions from the group followed each person’s intro, and we found ourselves having a mastermind.

The diversity of the group, made the conversation rich and exciting. Diversity in our:

  • Industries - Real Estate, Podcast Marketing, Mathematics, B2B Startup Marketing, Video Production, No-Code, Online Education.
  • Current Business Ages - ranging from approx 2 years to 10 years.
  • Product Ecosystems - books, videos, podcasting, newsletters, accelerators, online courses, coaching, consulting, agency.
  • Nationalities - Croatian, Swedish, Canadian, American, British.
  • Audience Size - ranging from 400 followers to 70k followers.
  • Age - approx 25-45 years.

Having Jay and The Lab in common contributed to the good vibes. The possibility to build on our IRL experience in the community helped too.

The meetup was really energising.

Hearing other people's stories helped me answer some questions lingering in my mind.

The 'online or creator business' world is still in it's early-ish stages, so it was awesome to hear different perspectives.

AND it was just the best to have the opportunity to take a Friday afternoon to hang out with an awesome crew.

Tips for hosting a gathering for your community

If you’re inspired to invite a community of yours to get together IRL, here’s some reflections on hosting this meetup in case they’re helpful!

Ask the community you have in mind if they wanna meet. It helps gauge interest, and brings them on the journey with you too.

Create an inviting and friendly invite. Share your why and wish for coming together. Bonus if you include an image.

Choose a nice location to hang out in that:

  • Has as much natural light as possible.
  • Is comfortable and spacious.
  • Is easy to find and get to.
  • Does really yummy food at reasonable value. Delicious and healthy food is an underestimated part of hosting. Get it right and you really lift the vibe of the event. It naturally makes people feel happy and adds to their energy level.

Connect with people before they come. This can be really light, from liking and commenting on their comment in the event post, to sending a quick DM. With a larger group, do the same with a broadcast message. This helps people feel welcome and excited for the meetup.

Arrive a little earlier to the venue so you can settle, go to the restroom, connect with the venue staff, choose your seat. That way, when people start arriving you’re present.

Don’t have any expectations and embrace the group size. A smaller group gives space for deeper conversations, a medium sized group brings diversity, and a larger group invites lots of connections.

If you want to dip your toe into hosting, or mix it up, ask someone to co-host with you :)

To connecting in real life with our communities!

A postcard from Barcelona today, where I've been the last few days to celebrate my birthday. The trip has been a great reminder for me on the power of rest, taking time out, and mixing up my environments. I can never get enough aeroplane views! Not only can it be fun to take time out, it nurtures our ability to 'incubate', the second stage of the four-stage process of creativity. To incubate is to not think consciously about a problem or topic. To let our brain have “downtime” and space to...
