How to scale your online education business

Published 4 months ago • 3 min read

Want to save hours, weeks, perhaps even years building your online education business?

If you don't know Olly Richards and his work yet, I recommend checking him out.

Olly founded StoryLearning.com in a dusty café in the Middle East in 2013.

Today, he runs his business from his home in the English countryside, surrounded by cows, dodgy internet and some of the most gorgeous beaches in the country.

At the start, he had no idea what he was doing. But someone had told him that he could write a blog about his hobby, learning foreign languages.

And so he did.

Here’s what StoryLearning eventually turned into:

  • A $10m education business
  • Profit margins of 50%+
  • Fully bootstrapped with zero investment or debt
  • An audience in the millions (monthly)
  • Books on the shelves of every major bookstore worldwide

I’ve hung out with Olly a couple of times in person in London. He is the real deal. No BS. Only signal. No noise. With a sprinkling of British humour, of course 😉

Here are five of his top resources I've found helpful, in case they’re useful to you too:

1. Blueprint Of A $10M Online Education Business

This 117 page case study shares the key things you need to know and do to set your business up for success.

There are LOTS of gems in there which reveal themselves to you each time you re-read the case study.

This quote is currently top of my mind:

… you're likely to have to do quite a bit of heavy lifting on the marketing front yourself.
Simply because getting the word out is hard.
Not only that, but:
As a business owner, it is your sole responsibility to drive the growth of the business.
You simply cannot outsource this.
For this reason, your job inevitably ends up shifting away from product and towards marketing and growth.

2. How a $10M Business ACTUALLY Does Email Marketing

I never really got email marketing until I watched this 33m video.

Olly synthesises his approach to email marketing into a masterclass.

He shares his framework for making millions of dollars every year through email.

3. The Easy Way to Build a 7-Figure Business

In 6 minutes, Olly shares the mistakes and tactics of entrepreneurs at the $200k ish mark versus those at the $700k+ mark.

These soundbites gives you a hint:

How can you double down on the things that are working for you, and get pro at them?
You can only scale simplicity.
You can’t scale complexity.

This perspective is an extension of Olly's grounded daily approach.

4. How to Build a Million Dollar Ecosystem for Your Creator Business

This 25m video walks through:

  • What a mature product ecosystem looks like.
  • The benefits of building an ecosystem intentionally.
  • The danger of ignoring it.

5. The RIGHT way to move from 1-to-1 to group coaching

As I've grown my business over the last three years, I've thought about ways to scale my 1-to-1 service.

A popular approach to scaling service based businesses is to create a cohort-based course or group coaching program.

I was surprised by Olly’s thinking process on the topic.

Check out his 7m video for a refreshing perspective to consider as you navigate making what can be a make or break decision for your business.

Bonus: Creator Smarts

In case you wanted more :)

Olly is also co-founder of Creator Smarts.

The Creator Smarts Video Podcast, Audio Podcast, and YouTube Channel are another goldmine of case studies, interviews, and masterclasses that'll sharpen your thinking on your online education business.

I hope what's moving the needle for me is useful for you too as you reflect on your 2023 and plan for 2024.

Olly’s simply awesome!

If you do check anything out, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

A postcard from Barcelona today, where I've been the last few days to celebrate my birthday. The trip has been a great reminder for me on the power of rest, taking time out, and mixing up my environments. I can never get enough aeroplane views! Not only can it be fun to take time out, it nurtures our ability to 'incubate', the second stage of the four-stage process of creativity. To incubate is to not think consciously about a problem or topic. To let our brain have “downtime” and space to...
