Wrap up your course with a memorable and powerful approach

As we enter the last weeks of 2022 - just 7 left to go now(!) - many courses are wrapping up, and those with an ongoing learning experience are hosting their final events of the year.

I caught up Gwyn and Lilian this week from Breakthrough Facilitation.

They shared how they use their Virtual Facilitator Coefficient (VFC) as part of their process to close their course with celebration and power.

I've shared a deep dive into their onboarding experience, it follows I share how they off-board their students too :)

In the final session we have an activity where we use the VFC.
This is a great prompt for our learners to complete their VFC on their own.
They also come to the session having already dedicated some time to self-reflection.

In the final session of Breakthrough Facilitation, Gwyn and Lilian encourage reflection and celebration of both the individual and group journey.

Individual Journey

In Zoom breakout rooms of two people, they invite each person to share:

  • Their Virtual Facilitator Coefficient
  • How have they grown as a facilitator in the course?
  • What areas do they want to continue growing in?

After the peer-to-peer reflections, the group comes back together to debrief on what struck them in their conversations.

The benefits of using the VFC are:

  • It makes visible the individual and group progress.
  • Everyone has a common language and structure to reflect and explore the next steps for their growth.

Group Journey

Gwyn shares the group's aggregate VFC scores. It is a way for the group to make sense and reflect on their journey together.

Having used the VFC for 3 cohorts, the data also provides Gwyn and Lilian insights on where learners are growing fastest, which aspects of the course they need to improve, and the overall progress of the group.

Here you can see Gwyn's post of Cohort 3's VFC aggregate scores in their learning community platform:

For the next activity in their final session, Gwyn invites everyone to map out their Aha! moments and reflections in a Miro board. It's an awesome artefact to create and share as a group.

Here's the one I had created with my group when I was in BF Cohort 1:

How we close something, is:

  • how we remember it,
  • create a sense of completion, and
  • move into the next phase of the journey.

Individual and group reflection is a key part of wrapping up a learning experience well.

To create a powerful closing and celebration, key ingredients are:

  • Nurturing a safe space for it.
  • Giving people a structure to do so in a meaningful way.
  • Enabling the creation of artefacts — for BF it was the VFC individual and group reports, and the Miro group-storm.

I hope the student experience Gwyn and Lilian have created inspires you, as it inspires me, in how you wrap up your course, or your final events for 2022.

A postcard from Barcelona today, where I've been the last few days to celebrate my birthday. The trip has been a great reminder for me on the power of rest, taking time out, and mixing up my environments. I can never get enough aeroplane views! Not only can it be fun to take time out, it nurtures our ability to 'incubate', the second stage of the four-stage process of creativity. To incubate is to not think consciously about a problem or topic. To let our brain have “downtime” and space to...
